I don’t know about you, but the second August hits, my brain starts whispering…
“Cozy season is coming.” 🍂
Suddenly, I’m thinking about soft blankets, cooler nights, and one of my favorite cold-weather meals: jambalaya.
Now, jambalaya is delicious in a bowl.
But jambalaya belongs in a bowl—not your bank account.
See, jambalaya works because everything gets mixed together: the rice, the sausage, the shrimp, the vegetables…
Your money? Not so much.
One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is what I call Jambalaya Money.
That’s when your paycheck, bill money, emergency fund, and vacation savings are all sitting together in one big, jumbled pile.
At first, it might not seem like a problem. Until life starts life-ing.
You swipe your card at Sephora. A subscription comes out that you forgot about. You grab takeout because you’re too tired to cook.
And before you know it, you’ve accidentally taken a bite out of money that wasn’t meant to be touched—especially your emergency fund.
That’s the danger of Jambalaya Money: when everything is mixed together, it’s hard to tell what’s actually safe to spend.
I prefer giving every dollar a clear home.
You don't need a dozen different banks to do this, but at a minimum, you want a clear separation between:
Your Spending Money: For everyday bills and life.
Your Emergency Fund: Tucked safely away so it never gets eaten by accident.
When your money has clear homes, you can spend with confidence because you know exactly what each dollar is designated to do.
Goodie Bag
When you're ready to separate your money, you don't have to make it complicated.
My "yes" list for a great savings home is simple:
It should earn way more interest than a traditional bank.
It should be FDIC insured.
It should not charge annoying monthly fees.
SoFi Checking and Savings checks all three of those boxes—plus it comes with a feature called Vaults that completely cures Jambalaya Money.
Vaults let you split your savings into separate, clearly labeled sub-accounts inside your app. That means your emergency fund, travel goal, and rainy-day stash each get their own bowl—without you having to track it all on a napkin.
Plus, if you set up direct deposit, you can even get paid up to two days early, giving you a head start on moving your savings where it belongs before life gets in the way.

Do you keep your bills, spending money, and savings clearly separated—or is everything currently cooking in one big pot? Hit reply and let me know!
If You Remember One Thing…
Jambalaya is delicious. Jambalaya Money is expensive.
Give every dollar a clear home so the money meant for your future doesn’t accidentally get eaten today.
Live richer,
Tiffany
